Woman Pastor named as Sweden's First Openly Gay Bishop

Sweden's first openly gay bishop Eva Brunne
In a ceremony at Uppsala cathedral on Sunday, the Church of Sweden named a female pastor as the country's first openly homosexual bishop. It follows just months after Sweden became one of the first countries in the world to allow gays to marry in church.

Eva Brunne, 55, was consecrated as the Bishop of Stockholm in front of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia one month after the Lutheran church gave its official Synod approval to gay marriage in church. In another first, it was also the first time that two female Bishops were consecrated together. Tuulikki Koivunen Bylund became Bishop of Härnösand.
Eva Brunne , wjo lives in a registered partnership and has a three year old son, replaces Caroline Krook who was Bishop of Stockholm for 11 years.
Back in May, the government's gay marriage law came into effect but the Church of Sweden, which was the State church until 2000, only gave its synod approval on October 22.
Sweden had its first female Bishop in 1997.
